Renting an Apartment Near Politecnico di Milano: A Guide for International Students

Politecnico di Milano is one of Europe's top universities for engineering, architecture and design, and many of its programmes are taught in English. Finding a room or a flat near campus is the first challenge for international students: this guide explains where to look, what it costs and how to avoid the usual traps.

Where the Politecnico campuses are

• Leonardo (Città Studi): the main campus, around Piazza Leonardo da Vinci, served by the M2 green line (Piola and Lambrate stations).
• Bovisa: engineering and design schools in the north-west, served by the suburban railway (Milano Bovisa station).

Living right next to campus is convenient but expensive. Many students choose a well-connected area a few metro stops away and save several hundred euros a month.

The M1 + M2 route from Precotto and Turro

Our apartments are in north-east Milan on the M1 red line. From Turro or Precotto you ride three or four stops to Loreto, change to the M2 and get off at Piola: about 15–20 minutes door to campus. It's one of the fastest commutes to Città Studi you can get outside the university district itself.

What students usually struggle with

• High deposits: many landlords ask for 2–3 months up front, plus an agency fee.
• Hidden costs: electricity, gas, heating and Wi-Fi often come on top of the rent.
• Contracts in Italian: a lease you don't understand is a risk, and an unregistered one is useless for residence permits and scholarships.

How we make it simpler

• No three-month deposit for monthly stays (more on renting with no deposit).
• Bills included: one monthly price with electricity, gas, heating, water and gigabit Wi-Fi.
• A registered contract: a transitional or student lease valid for residence and visa purposes.
• Whole apartments: a desk, a full kitchen and a washing machine, not a room in a shared flat.

When to start looking

Start 6–8 weeks before the semester begins. September and February are the busiest months: if you are coming for the autumn semester, book by July.
