Student housing in Milan: where to live and how to rent

Milan hosts more than 200,000 university students. Finding a room or a flat is the first exam: here's how to pass it.

Student housing in Milan: where to live and how to rent

Where should students live in Milan?

Choose by commute, not by fame. From Precotto and Turro on the M1 you reach Bicocca in about 15 minutes, Politecnico (Città Studi) in 15–20 and the Statale in 20–25. Whole furnished apartments with a registered student or transitional lease avoid shared-flat contracts and big deposits.

Room or whole apartment?

A room in a shared flat costs less, but you share kitchen and bathroom with strangers and the contract is often informal. A studio or one-bedroom gives you privacy and quiet for studying, and can be shared with a partner or a fellow student. Our apartments are whole homes: you don't share them with anyone.

The student lease

In Italy, students enrolled at a university in a different municipality from their residence can sign a contract for university students lasting 6 to 36 months. For shorter periods (a semester, Erasmus) the transitional lease is used, with the reason of study documented. Both must be registered with the tax office: it protects you and it's needed for residence permits and scholarships.

Erasmus in Milan: a quick checklist

  • Book housing before you leave: an Erasmus semester runs September–February or February–July.
  • Ask for a registered contract and a receipt for every payment.
  • Check what's included: Wi-Fi, heating and bills can add €150–250 per month.
  • Never pay a deposit before seeing photos, contract and the host's identity.
With RAM there is no three-month deposit and all bills are included, so you know exactly what you'll spend every month.
