Monthly rentals in Milan: a practical guide

How much does a monthly rental cost in Milan?

A furnished one-bedroom flat outside the centre but on the metro typically costs €1,900–2,700 per month on the main platforms. RAM's monthly apartments on the M1 start from about €1,580 per month for the Turro studio, with bills and Wi-Fi included and no three-month deposit.

What is a mid-term rental?

Between a holiday let (a few nights) and a classic 4+4 lease there is the mid-term rental: from 1 to 18 months, furnished, often with bills included. In Italy it is regulated by the transitional lease (contratto transitorio) or, for university students, by the student lease. It is the natural option for people relocating for work, interns, researchers and Erasmus students.

How much does a monthly rental cost in Milan?

Milan is the most expensive rental market in Italy. For a furnished one-bedroom flat outside the centre but well connected by metro, guest prices on the main platforms are typically between €1,900 and €2,700 per month. In the centre they rise quickly. Always compare the total cost: rent, bills, Wi-Fi, agency fees and deposit.

Which areas to choose

Look at the metro map before the neighbourhood name. North-east Milan along the M1 red line (Precotto, Turro, Gorla) offers quieter streets, lower prices than the centre and a direct line to Duomo, Cadorna and Rho Fiera. Bicocca University is close by, and Loreto (M2 interchange) is only a few stops away for Politecnico and Centrale station.

Documents you'll need

  • Passport or ID card and Italian tax code (codice fiscale), which you can request at the Agenzia delle Entrate or a consulate.
  • A document proving the reason for your stay (work contract, university enrolment, internship letter): it is required for the transitional lease.
  • For residence or visa purposes, a registered contract.
Tip: start your search 4–8 weeks before arrival. September, January and February are the busiest months because of universities and trade fairs.

Monthly stays with RAM

The one-bedroom in Via Val di Non and the studio in Turro are designed for long stays: desk, gigabit fibre, washing machine, fully equipped kitchen and a registered contract. Minimum stay 30 nights.
